Low Vision - What can be done?
Have you been told there is "nothing else that can be done" for your vision?
New technologies now enable people with vision problems to regain lost functional
vision and independence.
Each year thousands of people experience a decrease in their vision not treatable by glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery. When uncorrectable, decreased vision limits you in your performance of everyday tasks. Low Vision can be treated with such devices as:
- telescopes
- microscopes
- prisms and special glasses
- glare and contrast controlling filters
- electronic magnification systems (CCTV's)
- non-optical vision aids
- Magnifiers
Low vision may result from a variety of eye problems such as:
- macular degeneration
- glaucoma
- diabetic retinopathy
- traumatic brain injury or stroke
- corneal disease
- congenital diseases such as albinism or retinitis pigmentosa, nystagmus
A low vision exam by Dr. Huggett focuses on the problems caused by your visual impairment rather than your eye disease with which you have been diagnosed. He will find out what you can see and what you want to see (your "Wish List"). Once Dr. Huggett determines what your visual needs are, he will recommended the appropriate device to help attain these needs. Information on other rehabilitative services is also provided, such as in-home training and orientation/mobility instruction.
